Intelligent Systems

The Intelligent Systems research unit - an interdisciplinary research group at the IIT - is focused on the study and application of advanced techniques to facilitate decision making in the exploitation and planning of systems, equipment and industrial processes. Making use of the most advanced techniques and technology, we design, develop and put into operation ‘made to measure’ systems to facilitate decision making in complex problems such as the long- and short-term planning of large electrical companies, (MORSE or DECA projects), the diagnosis and maintenance of equipment and industrial plants (DENISE-MAINTENANCE), the automatic identification of vehicles in road traffic or the automatic guidance of autonomous vehicles (VISICOPTER). In general, the research projects we undertake provide solutions to the real problems of the companies with which we collaborate and facilitate their business activities, in many cases leading to greater profitability in the short term. We have our own tools for the construction of Information Systems OLAP, Knowledge-Based Systems, and for the Analysis, Prediction and Mining of Data, all of which enable us to provide effective solutions to many of the problems we are asked to study and solve. The area carries out most of its activities in the electrical, gas, agricultural transport and health sectors. The fields of activity of the area and the techniques employed are rapidly selected and modified in accordance with changes in technology and the interests of industry.

Alvaro Sánchez Miralles holds a Doctor’s degree in Engineering Sciences from Comillas Pontifical University. He is an experienced researcher at the IIT from Comillas University, where he has been working for over 17 years. He is currently the coordinator of the Intelligent Systems research group at IIT. The goal of his research activity is to improve the value of companies, institutions and society applying artificial intelligence, optimizing systems and processes at all the layers : physical (electronics, sensors, power converters), communication (FIWARE, CIM, SEP), intelligence and business models. The main fields of interest are smart grids and smart cities: integration of renewable generation and storage in distribution networks (smart storage, microgrids), electric vehicles (V2G and VPP), planning power grids (reference network models, system planning with central and distributed energy resources evolution and tariff design) and energy management in buildings and districts (aggregation of prosumers with market price maker and taker participation, microgrids, building and home energy management systems, electric and thermal synergies optimization). Furthermore, he has a lot of experience in security systems and autonomous land and aerial vehicles: computer vision, simultaneous location and mapping, indoor localization of people and active and robust security systems. He is an Associate Professor at the Electronics and Automation Engineering Department. He has participated in more than 60 consultancy and research projects for several Spanish and foreign firms and regulatory commissions, related with the energy industry (more than 30 as Principal Investigator). He has published more than 50 scientific publications (17 major international peer-reviewed multi-disciplinary scientific journals). In 2012, he received the “2012 IBM Enterprising Award”.
