Resilience-Oriented Anticipatory Operation and Planning of Distribution Systems under Extreme Events”
A position is offered for a Pre-doctoral Researcher to develop a PhD thesis on resilience-oriented operation and planning of electricity distribution systems under extreme events at the Institute for Research in Technology (IIT), in person at Rey Francisco 4, Madrid.
The research will focus on developing advanced modelling, simulation and optimisation methods to improve the ability of distribution systems to anticipate, withstand and recover from extreme events. Particular attention will be given to anticipatory strategies that support Distribution System Operators in moving from reactive approaches towards predictive and adaptive decision-making.
The candidate will work on methods for assessing extreme-event impacts, anticipating critical operating conditions, and designing operational and planning strategies that enhance distribution-system resilience. The work may involve power-system modelling, optimisation, probabilistic methods, data analysis and artificial intelligence.
Requirements
The ambition to become an expert in the modelling, operation and planning of future electricity distribution systems, with a strong interest in power-system resilience and quantitative decision-making.
• Master's degree in electrical engineering, energy engineering, applied mathematics or a closely related field.
Strong background in electrical power systems, preferably including distribution-network modelling, power flow, operation and/or planning.
• Programming skills in Python and experience developing simulation and data-analysis workflows.
• Knowledge of optimisation methods and probabilistic or stochastic modelling, including uncertainty analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, will be positively valued.
• Knowledge of distributed energy resources, power-system resilience, extreme-event analysis or advanced distribution-system operation will be positively valued.
• High level of written and spoken English. Fluency in Spanish will be positively valued.
Will be valued: ability to work in a research team, analytical and programming skills, scientific curiosity and motivation to develop an independent research line.
