CEVESA Modelling of Endogenous Natural Gas–Hydrogen Blending in Combined-Cycle Power Plants

D. Rodríguez, S. Doménech, F.A. Campos, J. Villar

Summary:

Hydrogen blending in combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) couples electricity dispatch to hydrogen production and storage. This paper presents a fuel-disaggregated extension of the CEVESA market model in which the hydrogen share in CCGT is determined endogenously within prescribed bounds. Fixed conversion coefficients keep the blending constraints linear, while explicit fuel balances connect co-firing to electrolysis and storage. The formulation is assessed using reported simulations of a 2030 Iberian scenario, represented by 52 hourly-resolved weekly problems. A no-blending reference is compared with a case allowing up to 7% hydrogen blending. Under the blending scenario, NG consumption and direct CCGT CO2 emissions decrease by 14.1%, while CCGT electricity generation falls by 8.4% and renewable curtailment by 6.8%. Hydrogen accounts for approximately 6.3% of the annual CCGT fuel consumption. Mean electricity prices decline by 17.6% in Spain and 17.1% in Portugal.

Spanish layman's summary:

Se analiza la mezcla endógena de H2 y gas natural en MIBEL. En el escenario 2030, reduce un 14,1 % el consumo de gas y las emisiones directas de los ciclos combinados, y un 6,8 % los vertidos renovables.
