Original summary:

English summary:

In order to advance the transition towards a decarbonised energy system, the electricity system will require new investments in storage technologies capable of facilitating the integration of variable renewable energy sources. Estimating these investments is essential to prepare the system for unusual events or adverse meteorological years. In this study, we estimate the storage requirements foreseen for the Spanish electricity system in 2030 and 2050, taking these circumstances into account. The results highlight the importance of increasing demand-side flexibility and enhancing the flexibility of hydropower generation, as well as the need to develop specific mechanisms that enable the deployment of the storage capacity required to ensure system reliability, since energy markets alone do not allow these technologies to recover their costs. The study also identifies the need for seasonal storage by 2050, which cannot be provided by current technologies.

English layman's summary:

The study analyses the optimal electricity storage requirements in Spain to integrate renewable energy sources in 2030 and 2050. It concludes that demand-side and hydropower flexibility will be key, and that by 2050 seasonal storage will be required beyond the capabilities of current technologies.
