Investigation of submarining risk in reclined postures

Funding entity Transportation Research Center

The main goal of this proposal is to characterize how the initial placement of the lap belt with respect to the pelvis influences the kinematics, (and specifically, the kinematics of the pelvis) and injury outcome of PMHS at two different speeds (low- and high-speed).
This goal will be achieved through the following partial objectives:
1) Performing three sled tests on the same PMHS: two at low speed (with two different positions of the lap belt) and one at high speed. Three different PMHS will be tested in these conditions.
2) Establishing a method to document with precision the relative position of the lap belt with respect to anatomical landmarks of the pelvis of the occupant.
3) Measuring the kinematics of the pelvis and of the lap belt during the tests and obtaining their relative position through the test thanks to a motion capture system.
4) Performing a detailed autopsy of the subjects after the high-speed test to document the injuries found, paying special attention to the lumbar spine and the pelvis.

Layman's summary: Analysis of the effect of the lap belt position in submarining

Techniques employed: Crash tests with PMHS and TAC analysis
