Children and young people are increasingly exposed to evolving forms of cybercrime, from cyberbullying and online grooming to fraud, sexual extortion and new threats enabled by artificial intelligence. At the same time, prevention approaches across Europe need to evolve to keep pace with rapidly changing technologies and online behaviours.

Cybersecure Mission brings together law enforcement agencies, researchers and education stakeholders from across Europe to develop a more engaging, evidence-based approach to cybercrime prevention. Building on the experience of the European RAYUELA project and its successful deployment through Portugal’s Missão Cibersegura initiative, the project uses serious games to engage young people with real-world online risks in an interactive and meaningful way.

The approach goes beyond traditional awareness-raising. By combining prevention activities with research, Cybersecure Mission creates a virtuous circle in which interactions with the game can generate anonymised evidence about online risks and behaviours. These insights can, in turn, support the development of more effective and better targeted prevention strategies.

Cybersecure Mission will further develop this approach and support its adoption in different European contexts, adapting the experience to emerging threats, different languages and younger audiences. Through collaboration between law enforcement, education and research communities, the project aims to strengthen prevention capabilities, foster knowledge exchange across borders and contribute to a more sustainable European model for protecting minors online.

Ultimately, Cybersecure Mission seeks to transform cybercrime prevention from a largely one-way awareness activity into an engaging, evidence-driven process in which prevention, research and policy continuously reinforce one another.

Layman's summary: Cybersecure Mission uses serious games to help children and teenagers understand online risks. By combining prevention, research and education, it aims to make young people safer online and improve how Europe responds to cybercrime affecting minors.
