3D Interface element applied to the simulation of crack growth with plasticity

Summary:
Some results of numerical simulations of the crack growth of a large diameter shaft with geometric stress raisers are presented. The shaft is subjected to alternating a) axial b) torsional external forces. The simulations are based on a cohesive fracture model published by the authors. This is derived form a stress/elongation law following Peierls'models recently revised by Rice, Beltz and others. The method intercalates elements with zero width into the mesh, between the shared faces of solid elastoplastic elements and then monitors crack growth by assigning these interfacial elments a damage variable "0" (closed), "1" (openend) or an intermediate value for any state between.
