This study has assessed the possibility of considering the SIEPAC project (the electric interconnection of Central America countries) as a Clean Development Mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol. This interconnection may achieve CO2 emissions reductions because of the bigger efficiency it promotes in the interconnected electricity systems. In order to carry out the assessment, the requirements established by United Nations have been examined, and a first estimation of the CO2 emissions saved due to the interconnection has been carried out.
