AQUARIOS: Quantitative Risk Analysis for Tunnels in Road Networks

B. Vitoriano J. Villar

December 2004 - May 2005

Funding entity TEKIA Consultores

Tunnels are considered in the European directive 2004/54/EC as especially relevant infrastructures for road transport. So, safety in tunnels is especially important because of the consequences of the accidents as well as their social impact. Tunnels included in the directive are over 500m., and some measures risk-reduce are there described. To perform risk analysis is included in several of the measures, but it is not detailed how to develop it.
Any system or method about risk analysis must be based on quantitative studies to compare the relevance of safety measures. In this framework, the aim of this research is the development of a decision support system to perform a quantitative risk analysis in tunnels for road transport. The scope of this project will be focused on specifying the relevant elements characterising the risk of accident and different numerical measures to compare risks, as well as the development of methods and models to compute them. Moreover, the project will be limited to evaluate the risk of an incident appearing in a tunnel, more than to evaluate consequences. Later research will be aimed to continue this study to complete the global objective.
