Biography:
Sajjad Solat is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Comillas Pontifical University.
He received his Ph.D. degree in 2022 from the Center of Excellence for Power Systems Automation and Operation, School of Electrical Engineering, at the Iran University of Science and Technology. His dissertation focused on electric distribution network expansion planning from electric distribution stakeholder organization (EDSO) viewpoint in the presence of active customers.
He is an electrical engineer, having received both his Master’s Degree (2014) and Bachelor’s Degree (2012) from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the Isfahan University of Technology. Throughout his academic path, he has served as a Teacher Assistant for Power System Analysis.
Over the years, he has combined his academic work with private industry roles, serving as an Electrical Engineer Expert and industrial microgrid designer at companies like Asiawatt Private Engineering Company, and as an Electrical Researcher at the Niroo Research Institute.
His core activity mainly concerns research projects regarding active electrical distribution network planning, renewable energy expansion, local energy and flexibility market design, and regulatory frameworks for future grids.
Areas of interest:
Uncovering the underlying complexities at the intersection of power system physics, economics, and regulation; data-driven AI-based optimization in power systems; stakeholder-centric microgrid designing and planning; renewable energy integration; hosting capacity improvement for both electrification and renewable energy generation; local energy and flexibility market design; behavioral economics in renewable energy expansion; regulatory and policy frameworks for future networks.
Experience:
Throughout his career, Sajjad has focused on the technical, economic, and regulatory transformation of active electric distribution networks. He has extensively investigated the evolution of distribution system operators (DSOs) into broader stakeholder organizations, publishing key literature on market mechanisms design, hosting capacity improvement, and active electric distribution system expansion planning. His research includes co-authoring the book "Business Models in the Field of Electric Distribution" and contributing major technical reports on monitoring electricity losses for national research entities. Additionally, his work explores the integration of behavioral economics within power systems alongside data-driven engineering models. He has received recognition for his contributions, including a Best IEEE Paper Award at the Electrical Power Distribution Conference (EPDC) for his work on multi-criteria business prioritization in power networks.
