Biography:

Maria Segui-Gomez obtained her degree in Medicine and General Surgery (1991) and a Master’s in Public Health (1993) from the University of Barcelona, and later a Master of Science (1995) and Doctor of Science (1999) from Harvard University.

Since 1993, her research has focused on the prevention of injuries, particularly road traffic crashes. She has held academic appointments at Harvard University (Deputy Director of the Injury Control Center), Johns Hopkins University (member of the Injury Control and Research Center), and the University of Virginia School of Medicine (currently, Visiting Professor). At the University of Navarra, she became a tenured professor in Preventive Medicine and Public Health and founded the European Center for Injury Prevention (2004–2011), recognized as a WHO Collaborating Center.

In 2011 she was appointed General Director for Public Health, Drug Dependencies and Consumer Affairs for the Government of Castilla-La Mancha, and shortly after, General Director of Traffic for Spain, where she oversaw an 18% reduction in road traffic fatalities.

Since 2016, Dr. Seguí-Gómez has served as an international consultant for organizations such as the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and its High-Level Panel, the World Bank, and the World Health Organization, where she coordinated the Global Status Report on Road Safety 2023. She is currently the Director of the HALE Chair (Health, AI, and Learning for Global Equity), through which she advances her interest in strengthening education on road safety and other health-related fields.

Over the course of her career, she has authored more than 200 scientific publications and has contributed to international teaching and training programs, including the WHO Teach-VIP initiative. She has also served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and held leadership positions in professional associations such as APHA, AAAM, and ISVIP. Her contributions have been recognized with multiple international awards.
