Biography:
Juan Pablo Chaparro is a predoctoral researcher at IIT at Universidad Pontificia Comillas, currently working on the RENOVIT-2 project focused on energy justice. He holds a BSc. in Mechanical Engineering from Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia), where he also completed an academic minor in Industrial Production Management. He earned a double Master’s degree in Environomical Pathways for Sustainable Energy Systems (SELECT) from KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and Politecnico di Torino (Italy), awarded by EIT InnoEnergy. His professional background of over 4 years spans from mechanical design for the automotive industry, to the execution of large-scale infrastructure projects in Colombia's oil sector and techno-economic modeling and decarbonization analysis in European R&D environments.
Areas of interest:
Sustainable energy systems, energy systems modeling and simulation, decarbonization of thermal demand, energy efficiency in buildings and industry, energy justice, energy poverty, and techno-economic assessment of energy infrastructure.
Experience:
He has 3 years of experience in managing and executing large-scale mechanical projects in the oil & gas sector, leading multidisciplinary teams in the construction of facilities and piping systems. He conducted his Master’s thesis at Vattenfall R&D (Stockholm), where he developed models for the decarbonization of residential heating systems in Germany and the Netherlands through the techno-economic analysis of various technologies, including heat pumps, thermal storage, and photovoltaics. He has participated in international sustainable energy planning projects, such as the renewable energy deployment plan for the San Andrés Archipelago in Colombia and the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the H2MED hydrogen pipeline.
Skills:
Energy systems modeling, Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA), Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), energy efficiency, PolySun, Aspen Plus, MATLAB, OpenLCA, OSEMOSYS, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, and EPCM project management.
