7.7 million tonnes of food are discarded each year in Spain, according to a recent FAO report. Food lies at the heart of trying to tackle climate change, reducing water stress, pollution, restoring lands back to forests or grasslands, and protecting the world’s wildlife. The aim of this study is to analyse the relevance of this environmental impact of food waste in Spain, especially in terms of energy consumption and greenhouse emissions. It will also propose measures to reverse this situation in the medium (2030) and long term (2050 and beyond).
