Reserve deployment of RES in island power systems

Currently, renewable energy sources (RES) do not contribute to ancillary services such as primary and secondary reserves in island power systems. Reserves are provided by conventional generators only. Studies show that under high penetrations of RES, it might be beneficial to provide reserve by RES as well. The objective of this project is to evaluate how RES respond to disturbances under non-ideal conditions (e.g., power generation is below the predicted level, reducing available reserve). For this purpose, the response to disturbances is dynamically simulated for a large set of generation dispatch scenarios and under varying reserve levels assigned to RES. Dispatch scenarios will be modified by varying RES power generation and thus adapting conventional generation through a least-marginal cost criterion.
