Distribution Network Planning Models for Integrating Distributed Energy Resources
A position is offered for a Pre-doctoral Researcher to Distribution Network Planning Models for Integrating Distributed Energy Resources at at Institute for Research and Technology, in person at Rey Francisco 4.
Distribution networks have become a fundamental element in the energy transition. They play a key role in the decarbonisation of the electricity system and in the electrification of other sectors, such as industry, transport and heating and cooling. Traditionally, distribution networks were designed to operate in demand-only scenarios. However, this paradigm has changed with the growing penetration of distributed generation and, in general, distributed energy resources.
In this new context, networks must evolve to become more resilient and flexible, allowing for the integration of technologies such as electric vehicles, storage systems, demand response and distributed renewable generation, while improving energy efficiency. The incorporation of these resources introduces new levels of uncertainty into grid planning and operation, posing significant technical challenges but also offering new opportunities in the form of flexibility.
Distribution networks are at the heart of this transformation, as they constitute the infrastructure that enables these energy resources to be connected and managed in a decentralised manner. In Europe, significant investments are planned in the coming years to strengthen and expand distribution networks, with the aim of increasing their hosting capacity and facilitating the energy transition. In this context, aspects such as reliability and resilience are becoming increasingly important.
This paradigm shift highlights the need to develop new models and tools to plan and operate increasingly complex electricity distribution systems, as well as to assess the impact of these changes on the regulatory framework. This position will focus on the development of distribution network planning models and tools aimed at identifying the needs of distribution system operators and analysing how these networks can adapt to the demand growth associated with the electrification of other sectors and the energy transition. It will also address the efficient integration of distributed energy resources, including, among others, distributed renewable generation, smart electric vehicle charging strategies, the optimisation and operation of storage systems, and the activation of demand response mechanisms.
