Distribution Network Planning Models for Integrating Distributed Energy Resources

Renewable distributed generation and the electrification of other sectors, like transportation (e.g. electric vehicles), are a great opportunity for decarbonizing the energy system. At the same the integration of distributed energy resources poses technical challenges for the power distribution network and brings opportunities in the form of additional flexibility. Distribution networks are at the core of this transition, being the backbone that enables to connect these resources in a distributed way, and requiring huge investments. Moreover, reliability and resilence cover nowadays a greater significance.

This paradigm shift brings the need for new tools for planning and operating a power distribution system that is becoming more complex. This position is intended to focus in distribution network planning tools to determine what are the needs of distribution system operators, and how they can accommodate the demand growth that the electrification of other sectors will require, and connect these distributed resources ( (e.g., integrating renewable distributed generation, defining smart charging strategies, optimizing and operating storage, activating demand response, etc.).

Requirements

The candidate must have a master's in Engineering and must have an advanced level of English and/or Spanish. Knowledge of power systems, distributed energy resources (e.g., electric vehicles) and advanced knowledge of programming languages will be an advantage.

What do we offer?

Annual full-time contract for the development of this research line. In addition, training activities may be carried out. This modality allows the Research Assistant to establish a very close professional relationship with the institutions with which he/she collaborates. The Research Assistant will apply for a PhD. The Research Assistant is hired each year for a maximum period of six. The gross salary for the first year is 31,472,55 € for the year 2025. In addition, the IIT covers 90% of the cost of training activities, and the Research Assistant can enjoy all the advantages offered to Comillas students (Sports, Cultural Activities, Library, etc.).

The candidate will become part of the REDES research group, which has vast experience applying distribution network models in collaboration with renowned international institutions, such as NREL, MIT, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, World Bank, Endesa, Iberdrola, etc. The candidate will learn theoretical and practical knowledge about power systems, distribution networks, and distributed energy resources.
