Island system operation with high degree of renewable energy resources

The candidate will work on models for operation planning of actual island power system including stability constraints, using as test power systems the Spanish Canary Islands. Taking as starting point a UC model that represents accurately the generation dispatch of Spanish isolated systems (developed for a Spanish generation company), and a simulation model of underfrequency load shedding schemes (UFLS)developed for the Spanish island operation. The objective of the PhD is to explore the relationship between the planning issues (solved by the UC model) and the stability issues (solved by UFLS schemes), proposing new methods for the operation of island power system with high penetration of non-synchronous generation, dealing simultaneously with operation planning and frequency stability. The new methods will be validated by applying them to the Canary Islands.

Requirements: Master engineering degree. Candidates should have (or be close to obtain) the academic requirements to join the PhD programme in Universidad Pontificia Comillas de Madrid. Good English level (understanding, writing and speaking). Knowledge on power systems, system operation (UC, dispatch), system stability, programming skills (GAMS, Matlab) will be valued positively.

Offer: Full-time contract with exclusive dedication to the PhD thesis.

Documents: Curriculum vitae, academic record, cover letter and two recommendation letters.
