Modelling and assessment of electricity network requirements for the energy transition

We offer a PhD position working in cooperation with one of the leading companies in the electricity sector in Spain with broad international presence. The aim is to analyze the impact of connecting new renewable power plants on the electricity network in the horizon 2030, under different scenarios. Moreover, the research should provide techno-economic recommendations to enable Spain to reach its decarbonization goals in a cost-efficient manner.

In order to achieve these goals, the selected candidate should identify possible barriers and inefficiencies derived from the existing regulatory framework considering, among other factors, differences between grid connection requirements and procedures in transmission and distribution grids, or between self-generators and generation units connected directly to the grid. Moreover, the selected candidate must assess and quantify the impact on network extension and reinforcement needs of geographical distribution of the renewable generation, the size of the generation units, the voltage level at the point of connection, etc. The candidate will work within the Smart and Sustainable Grids research unit in IIT under the supervision of Prof. Tomás Gómez, Dr. Rafael Cossent and Dr. Michel Rivier.

Requirements: Master’s Degree in Engineering. Candidates should be fluent in oral and written English and Spanish. The ideal candidate should also have a good understanding of Electricity Systems, Operations Research, and mathematical programming.

Full-time contract with combined dedication between research projects and training activities. This modality allows the Research Assistant to establish a very close professional relationship with the companies with which he/she collaborates, thus nourishing his/her research with the experience accumulated during the projects. Although this modality does not necessarily require to enroll in any program, the Research Assistant can apply for a PhD during the first two years. The Research Assistant is hired each year for a maximum period of 6. If he or she is not enrolled in a PhD program the contract cannot exceed two years. The gross salary for the first year is € 24.216,62 for 2019. In addition, the IIT covers 90% of the cost of training activities and the Research Assistant can enjoy all the advantages offered to Comillas students (Sports, Cultural Activities, Library, etc.).

Documents: Curriculum vitae, academic record, cover letter and two recommendation letters.
