Biomechanics, Tissue mechanical characterization, influence of age on the mechanical response of tissue

The goal of the project is to develop a methodology to scale the mechanical properties of bone tissue to subjects of different ages. To that end, the candidate will be responsible for the design and execution of a battery of experimental tests on bone tissue considering temporal and spatial non-linearities. Bone tissue will be obtained from different mammal species and at different developmental status. Traditional scaling approaches will be benchmarked against the experimental results. The data obtained from the experiments will be combined with finite element simulations to obtain developmental-dependent constitutive models of the bone tissue. The candidate will work in close collaboration with the members of the BioEngineering group of IIT at Universidad Pontificia Comillas. The successful candidate will complete his/her PhD during the duration of the scholarship (3 years).

Requirements: Applicants will have a Master’s degree on Mechanical Engineering or Material Science, preferably with experience in the mechanical characterization of materials. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the handling of biological tissue. Successful applicants will be familiar with analysis software such as Matlab or R. Demonstrated knowledge of FE codes will be considered.

Full-time contract with exclusive dedication to the PhD thesis.

Documents: Curriculum vitae, academic record, cover letter and two recommendation letters.
