Institute for Research in Technology

The IIT is a center within the ICAI School of Engineering at Comillas Pontifical University.

Its main aim is to promote research and training among postgraduate students in different technological fields by means of participating in specific projects of interest for the Industry and the Administration.

The purpose of the IIT is to make a contribution to society by transferring its research results. This transfer is based on the strictest respect for freedom and diversity of opinions of the researchers and lecturers as conscientious and independent experts. See details.

  • The ICAI School of Engineering has spent some time developing a new technology which consists of using intelligent labels to locate people and objects in the interior of structures and to locate lost objects. Moreover, “this can be used so that the blind can locate services such as benches, trash cans and fountains”, explained Álvaro Sánchez Miralles, a Professor of Electronics, Automation and Communications at ICAI, and one of the main researchers on the project. TagloS 3.0, which is the name of the application, is a system for locating objects in the interior of structures, which opens an immense gamma of new possibilities, ranging from Safety (to know where people are) to guiding people within a building. On the other hand, this new technology for locating people or things also allows for the finding of lost objects.
  • Rafael Palacios, a Professor in the ICAI School of Engineering, has developed a mechanism which facilitates interaction at diverse levels between people with handicaps involving the nervous system by utilizing Google Glass. This system allows handicapped students to participate in usual activities in the classroom such as turning the pages of a book or transparencies, and taking a test on a computer with a simple functions; this requires a child to wear the glasses and to make head movements.
  • The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission (EC) is building a Distribution System Operators (DSOs) Observatory in collaboration with IIT and EURELECTRIC
  • Elena Saiz's proposal about the design of voltage control in wind farms has been awarded with the Eolo of Innovation's Prize 2016. The project, based on the doctoral thesis of Elena Saiz from the Pontifical University of Comillas, evaluates the potential of wind evacuation networks to provide voltage control / reactive effectively in the transport network.
