Resumen:

As represented in Fig. 1, molecular bonds present two distinct behaviours when exposed to external forces: rapid rupture, known as slip bond, or enhancement of the bond’s duration, known as catch bond. Slip bond behaviour is directly derived from Bell’s theory [1]. As for catch bonds, multiple phenomenological mechanisms have been proposed, successfully fitting experimental lifetime-force curves. However, this variety and complexity of models shrouds the intrinsic assumptions and hinders the ability to extract meaningful information from the data.
In this work, we classify the aforementioned models and present our own cooperative force-driven proofreading model (CFPR); a mechanistic attempt to understand quantitatively both bond regimes in the context of B-cell receptors (BCRs), in which the pulling geometry enables additional bond formation. To illustrate our results, Fig. 2 highlights combinations of this model’s parameters which induce slip bond and catch bond regimes.
