Francisco López-Valdés se graduó como Ingeniero Industrial (esp. Mecánica) en 2002 en la Universidad de Valladolid. Tras la graduación, colaboró en la creación del Departamento de Investigación de Colisiones en la Fundación CIDAUT. En 2006, se incorpora al Centro Europeo para la Prevención de Lesiones (ECIP) de la Universidad de Navarra. En 2007, gracias a una beca de postgrado de Obra Social La Caixa, se traslada a Estados Unidos y completa sus estudios de doctorado en el Center for Applied Biomechanics de la Universidad de Virginia. En 2012 se convierte en International Incoming Fellowhip en el proyecto Marie Curie «Bio-Advance» y regresa a España, donde se incorpora como investigador a la Universidad de Zaragoza. Allí coordina el establecimiento y desarrollo del primer laboratorio de impacto en España con capacidad de realizar ensayos experimentales con Post Mortem Human Surrogates (PMHS). Su investigación se centra en la prevención de lesiones y la biomecánica del impacto, con especial atención a las lesiones causadas en colisiones de vehículos. En 2017, Francisco se incorporó al Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica de ICAI (Universidad Pontificia Comillas) y como investigador asociado al IIT.
