Frequency Stability Constraints in Unit Commitments with Inverter-based Generation

The penetration of RES reduces system inertia and primary frequency control capability. BESS and RES generators are inverter-based generators. The control of the inverter is able to emulate the behaviour of synchronous machines, including inertia and droop control. In this project, the suitability of simple system frequency dynamic or response (SFR) models to simulate frequency stability phenomena is assessed. The confirmation of the suitability would allow formulating simple frequency stability constraints that could be incorporated into a unit commitment. Tasks 1) Review of the literature 2) Modeling of detailed models of BESS and synchronous machine (SM) models in Simulink 3) Modeling of simplified models of BESS and SM in Simulink 4) Simulation and comparison of the simulation outcomes 5) Formulation of frequency stability constraints
