Contribution of Battery Energy Storage Systems to the Stability of Low-Inertia Power Systems

We are looking for a highly motivated Ph.D. candidate to work on the modeling, control and stability analysis of battery energy storage systems in the context of modern electric power systems where converter interfaced generation will be ubiquitous in the grid. The successful candidate will work on developing new models and control strategies for battery energy storage systems to guarantee the provision of a variety of ancillary services to the grid in both interconnected as well as islanded power systems. The candidate will also work on developing new tools for System Operators to evaluate the quality and quantity of the service provided for adequate remuneration. Finally, classical stability studies such as small and large-signal stability, frequency and voltage stability, etc., as well as new, converter-driven issues such as high-frequency switching, resonances and harmonics will be considered to analyze the contribution of BESSs and its developed control to the stability enhancement.

If you are interested in this position, please send your CV and a brief statement of research interests. We are looking for candidates with a strong background in electrical engineering, control systems, or related fields. Experience with modeling and control of power electronics in commercial software tools and programming languages such as Matlab/SIMULINK, DigSilent, PSCAD and/or Python is highly desirable.
