The purpose of this project is to develop recommendations to improve the lightning protection in Union Fenosa´s power networks. The current lightning protection of outdoor and gas-insulated substations and transmission and distribution lines will be reviewed. Practical recommendations to improve this protection will be issued. There are four steps in this approach: (1) to build a simulation model of the network, (2) to simulate the overvoltages caused by a lightning strike in a substation or to a power line, (3) to study the sensitivity of the overvoltages with respect to the characteristics of the lightning strike and the configuration of the lightning protection and (4) to draw conclusions and put forward practical recommendations. This project is a continuation of a project developed between October 1995 and September 1996.
