A restructuring and liberalization process in the electric power sector is currently taking place in Italy. The Italian Power Exchange has been created recently and is in charge of implementing the wholesale market rules and operating this market. During this take-off phase, the Italian Power Exchange is also responsible for proposing market rules. This consultancy job is addressed to supporting the Italian Power Exchange during this implementation phase. The following tasks have been given priority: a) critical evaluation of the preliminary market design (bid matching procedures; consecutive markets; energy, reserves and regulation markets) and proposal of alternatives; b) design of market mechanisms to deal with long-term guarantee of supply.
