Low voltage power systems supervision

D. Soler

November 2003 - December 2004

Funding entity EUROLIMP S.A.

The work deals on the inspection of civil and industrial low voltage power systems meeting the new Low Voltage Directive standards. It also includes consultancy for the preventive and corrective maintenance for electric systems, including electric appliances, improvement analysis, energy audit and use of efficient equipment, explosive atmospheres, incidences analysis, etc. These previous issues help the customer to validate and control the contractor and his work on the power system, according to economical and technical reasons.
Supervision take four main issues: as-built on-line checking with visual wiring check, electric measurements, security of energy supply and consultancy for electrical systems in energy save.
Electric system supervision checks wiring and appliances according on-line diagrams. Any difference with these diagrams will be reported.
Tests and measurements on electric systems will verify control and protective devices and basic electric variables. Then a conscious analysis of sensitivity in protective devices takes place. If the system status fails new diagnostic techniques will be developed using status recording, and it additional time-sensitivity protective devices adjustment. Electric measurements are current, voltage, active and reactive power and energy. Safety measurements are also checked: circuit isolation test, continuity test, power losses, performance analysis and harmonic analysis. Electrical ground in all electric equipment and systems are also checked on demand.
Guarantee energy supply studies check how the electric system deals with the operation when the direct distribution network electric supply goes off. This is achieved with an specific system configuration, switching between main supply network and emergency systems such as SAI and emergency generators.
The project also includes energy consultancy, both economic and technical assistance. Technical issues deals with the appropriate configuration of the electrical system and emergency operation in critical circuits. Studies on motor start-up smooths the start-up current using electronic modules. Economic consultancy deals with studies on the facility™s electricity bill suited for each specific electric system. A power factor improvement also helps to reduce electricity charges, and also increase machine performance, reduce losses and decrease contribution to the greenhouse effect.
We recently audit railway stations in the high speed Spanish railway line between Madrid and Lérida.
