The electrified factory within the decarbonized energy system in 2050

One of the biggest tasks for our society over the next decades is the decarbonisation of our energy consumption. One possible pathway to reduce emissions in the industrial sector is its “partial” electrification. This thesis project aims to evaluate the likely degree of electrification for one of the energy intensive industries (e.g. pulp & paper, ceramics, glass or food, …). Based on the analysis of the energy intensity of production processes and a review of transformation efficiencies of fuel and electricity to heat for different temperature ranges, the student shall build a small model deciding about the optimal share of electrification based on expected operational costs (taking into account different scenarios for fuel, electricity and CO2 prices).
