Development of intelligent algorithms to improve recognition rates in an automatic toll collection facility based on artificial vision (VNE)

R. Palacios E.F. Sánchez-Úbeda

July 2004 - December 2004

Funding entity Indra

INDRA has developed an automatic toll system that is being used in Chile. It is a non-stop toll where cars freely drive on the highway and identifies each car by reading its front license plate. The system is based on a sophisticated set of digital cameras, which produce high quality images of each car, and optical character recognition software, which finds and reads its plate. Although recognition rates are good, accuracy can always been improved after the system has been used for some time, provided that enough amount of data has been gathered.

IIT will develop intelligent algorithms that will improve recognition rates in the most effective way. New algorithms will comprise strategies for increasing recognition rates and reducing false positive while maintaining lower rejection rates. In addition, the results obtained by several recognition modules running in parallel, will be analyzed to obtain even better results.

These algorithm will be develop and tuned for the facility coded VNE
